I understand the frustration faced by many content creators and small business owners as the digital landscape changes once again, turning organic search on its head.
It’s like you’re shouting into the void sometimes, isn’t it? You’re writing these incredible pieces, offering information that could genuinely change lives, and yet… crickets.
The content marketing approach of “if you build it, they will come” just doesn’t hold true any longer.
With AI “writers” churning out generic word vomit faster than we can brew a decent cup of coffee, the “good content” (aka anything that offers even a sliver of value) is quickly lost in the weeds. People are drowning in information, and simply providing information or an answer to the burning questions is no longer enough.
So, how do you stand out and still drive traffic in today’s world of search?
The question you need to ask yourself is why…
Why should someone want to read your content and not just be happy with an AI-generated answer?
What value are you offering that they can’t get from a ChatGPT chat or a Google AI Overview?
In the face of this sea of bland and generic information, where most websites are simply restating the same things over and over, what people are thirsting for is connection. They will happily click through to your website if they understand the importance of your answer, your perspective, your unique flavour.
That’s where brand recognition and authority are going to set the real winners apart.
Thank about it: You have a specific question, a problem that you need help with. Do you just click through the first thing Google delivers to you and blindly trust it? Probably not. I hope not… You likely gravitate to the sources that you know, the experts you trust, and the brands that have proven they know their stuff.
That’s the secret to success, isn’t it? Building that trust, that connection, so when people have a question – even if AI can technically answer it – they think, “I want to hear what they think about this.”
It’s about creating a community that values your insight, your experience, your unique views in a world that is increasingly dominated by algorithms and machine learning.
So, what does this mean for you? Where do you go from here?
I challenge you take a step back and ask yourself:
- What are you doing to position yourself as the trustworthy authority?
- What value are you bringing to the conversation?
- What makes you different from every other creator or brand in your niche?
Take these answers and revisit your content marketing plan. Re-evaluate what it means to create valuable content today in your niche and how you can foster a genuine connection with those who discover your content.
That’s the role we, as content creators and business owners, need to embrace. So, I return to the original question – Why should someone want to read your content?
If you can’t answer it, neither can they…
